Sponsorship programs

Dowson Turco are proud sponsors of:
The New Theatre
Rainbow Families
Animals Australia

Pro Bono work

Ongoing advocacy on gay hate crimes including pro bono work, advocacy and support for victims. We are calling for a Royal Commission into gay murders in Sydney during the 80s and 90s and early 2000s.

Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras

We are proud supporters of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, particularly through our membership of the organisation generally, our sponsorship of a stall at Fair Day and our general community contributions throughout the history of our firm.

Human rights & community

We seek out legal matters of community interest, particularly legal matters affecting human rights in employment and community participation.

Diversity

We pride ourselves on a diverse clientele comprising not only the gay and lesbian community, but people and businesses from all walks of life, and most importantly everyday Australians who work each day and participate in our free society.

Inner City Legal Centre

We are proud supporters of the Inner City Legal Centre Kings Cross (ICLC). Nicholas Stewart is a regular pro-bono lawyer at the ICLC and in between those shifts Nicholas and the Dowson Turco team support the ICLC's lawyers with commercial advice in respect of complex litigation and family law matters. The ICLC provides and invaluable contribution to the wider NSW community and Dowson Turco is committed to promoting access to justice through the centre.

Significant cases

De facto property disputes: We were integral to establishing the friends with benefits principle in the Family Court in 2015 and successfully defended a de facto claim on our client (who disputed that he owed his former sexual partner property entitlements).

Parenting: We successfully enforced parenting orders whereby our client's ex-partner claimed that a child was at risk due to being exposed to a gay parent.

Unlawful arrest: We successfully defended a Sydney drag queen accused of using a carriage service to harass a member of the NSW Police Force.

Discrimination: We successfully acted in a class action against a media company that published vilifying articles about homosexuals. The matter settled and we donated the funds to an LGBTI charity in a confidential settlement.

Discrimination: We represent four NSW Police Officers who claim they were targeted by superiors and colleagues in homosexual bullying, lost promotions and were subject to vilification in the workplace.
